How to export a ChatGPT conversation

Maybe you want to keep a long research chat in your notes app, paste a coding session into documentation, or simply keep a backup of a conversation you care about. There are two very different jobs here: exporting your whole ChatGPT history, and saving one conversation as a file. This guide covers both, starting with OpenAI's own free export.

Method 1: ChatGPT's official data export (whole account)

OpenAI documents this in its help article Exporting your ChatGPT history and data. At the time of writing the steps are:

  1. Sign in to ChatGPT and open your profile menu.
  2. Select Settings, then Data controls.
  3. Under Export data, select Export, then Confirm export.
  4. Wait for the email (or SMS) saying your export is ready, and select Download data export.

Things worth knowing from OpenAI's page:

Good for: a complete backup, or before you close or move an account. It is free and official.

Not ideal for: saving one chat right now. You wait for an email, then dig one conversation out of a file that holds all of them.

Method 2: Quick ways to save a single chat by hand

Method 3: Export the open chat as Markdown or JSON with ConvoRail

ConvoRail is our free browser extension for Chrome, Firefox and Edge. It adds a small panel at the top of the ChatGPT sidebar with folders, search and an Export button. To export the conversation you have open:

  1. Open the chat on chatgpt.com.
  2. Click Export in the ConvoRail panel.
  3. Choose Current chat → Markdown or Current chat → JSON. The file downloads straight away, named after the chat's title.

Markdown (.md) is plain text with light formatting. It opens in any text editor and pastes neatly into Obsidian, Notion, GitHub or a README. ConvoRail keeps bold and italic text, links, lists, code blocks, tables and quotes, and leaves out button and icon text. JSON keeps the title, the chat's address, each message with its role, and the time of export, which is handy if you want to process chats with a script.

A whole folder at once: if you file chats into ConvoRail folders, a folder's menu has Export folder (JSON), which saves every chat in that folder and its subfolders in one file. Message text is included for chats you have opened since installing ConvoRail. A chat you have not opened yet is listed with a note asking you to open it once.

Backups: the ConvoRail toolbar popup has Export backup and Import backup buttons, which save and restore your folders and the indexed chats as a JSON file.

Privacy: everything happens in your browser. ConvoRail has no server and no account, and it does not send your conversations anywhere.

Honest limits: ConvoRail reads the conversation from the open page. For very long chats, check that the file starts and ends where you expect before you rely on it as your only copy. It also does not replace OpenAI's export as a full account backup, so for that, use Method 1 as well.

Save any chat as Markdown in one click. ConvoRail is free and runs entirely in your browser.

FAQ

Does ChatGPT have an export button for a single chat?

OpenAI's documented export in Settings covers your whole account and arrives by email. For a single chat, people copy, print or share it, or use an extension.

Can I export deleted chats?

No. OpenAI's help page says an export cannot restore chats that have already been deleted.

Can I export a chat to PDF?

Yes, with your browser's Print dialog and Save as PDF. ConvoRail's free version exports Markdown and JSON, not PDF.

Is it safe to use an export extension?

Check what it does with your data. Look for a clear privacy policy and minimal permissions. ConvoRail only runs on ChatGPT pages and stores everything locally; see the ConvoRail privacy policy.
