How to convert a web page to EPUB for clean, ad-free reading
A good article is often buried under banners, "recommended for you" boxes, newsletter pop-ups and sponsored lines in the middle of the text. Converting the article into an EPUB file strips all of that away and gives you something you can read on a Kindle, a Kobo, a phone or a tablet, at the font size you like. This guide compares the free ways to do it and explains what makes a good conversion.
Why EPUB and not PDF?
EPUB is the standard reflowable ebook format. "Reflowable" means the text rewraps to fit the screen and your chosen font size, just like a book you buy. A PDF is a fixed page: it is great for printing, but on a 6-inch e-reader you end up zooming and panning. If you plan to read on a Kindle, EPUB is also one of the formats Amazon's Send to Kindle service accepts (Amazon's supported file types).
Option 1: Use your browser's reader view (free, no file)
If you only want to read the article now, without ads, your browser may already do it. Firefox has Reader View, Microsoft Edge has Immersive Reader, and Chrome has a Reading mode in its side panel. They hide most of the page clutter and let you change the text size.
Limit: you do not get a file. You cannot read it offline later, send it to an e-reader or keep it in a library.
Option 2: Print to PDF (free, quick, not reflowable)
Open the article (in reader view, if you like), press Ctrl+P or ⌘+P and choose Save as PDF. You now have a file, but it has fixed pages. That is fine on a large tablet and awkward on a small e-ink screen.
Option 3: Calibre (free desktop app)
Calibre is a free, open-source ebook manager for Windows, Mac and Linux. To convert a single article:
- In your browser, save the page as Web page, HTML only.
- In Calibre, click Add books and choose the saved
.htmlfile. - Select it and click Convert books, with EPUB as the output format.
Good for: people who already manage ebooks in Calibre and want full control over metadata and styling.
Limit: the saved HTML includes the whole page, so menus, footers and sometimes ads end up in the book unless you clean them up first. It is several steps for each article.
Option 4: Online "URL to EPUB" converters
Several websites take a link and return an EPUB. They are convenient, but the page is fetched and processed on someone else's server. That can matter for pages you are logged in to, and some sites block these servers, so you get a cookie wall or an empty file instead of the article.
Option 5: ArticleFerry (free browser extension)
ArticleFerry is our extension for Chrome, Firefox and Edge. It does the clean-up and the EPUB packaging in one click, entirely on your device:
- Open the article and click the ArticleFerry icon.
- ArticleFerry extracts the main text using Mozilla's open-source Readability library, the same family of technology behind Firefox's Reader View. It also removes common sponsored and advert blocks that sit inside the article, such as short lines labelled "Sponsored" or "Advertisement". Real sentences that merely mention a sponsor are kept.
- Check the preview of the title, author and word count, and edit the title or author if you want to.
- Click Download EPUB. You get a valid EPUB 3 file with a generated cover, the title and author in the book's metadata, and the article's images embedded where they can be fetched.
Because it reads the page as it is shown in your browser, ArticleFerry works from the article you are looking at. Nothing is uploaded to an ArticleFerry server, and no account is needed. To read it on a Kindle, see our guide to sending a web article to your Kindle. ArticleFerry can open a Gmail message addressed to your Kindle for you.
Make your first clean EPUB. ArticleFerry is free and works in Chrome, Firefox and Edge.
What makes a good article EPUB
Whichever method you use, check these before you file the result away:
- The whole article is there. Automatic extraction is very good but not perfect, especially on unusual page layouts. Skim the start and end.
- Title and author are set. E-readers sort and display books by their metadata. A file called
index.html.epubwith no author is hard to find later. - Sensible file name. Some services, including Amazon's personal documents, may show the file name as the title. A name like
Title - Author.epubavoids confusion. - Images where they matter. Charts and diagrams often carry the point of an article. In ArticleFerry, images hosted on other sites need an optional permission, which the browser asks you for. Text-only EPUBs work without it.
- No leftover clutter. Look for share buttons, newsletter boxes or "read next" lists at the end.
FAQ
Is it legal to convert a web page to EPUB?
Keeping a copy for your own reading is a common personal use, much like saving or printing a page, but copyright rules differ between countries and sites. Do not share, publish or sell converted articles, and respect each site's terms.
Will the EPUB keep the website's ads?
Article extraction removes most of the surrounding page, including side and banner ads. ArticleFerry also drops common sponsored blocks inside the text. No tool catches every possible ad format, so the preview is worth a glance.
Can I open the EPUB on my phone?
Yes. Apple Books, Google Play Books and most e-reader apps open EPUB files. For a Kindle, send the file through Amazon's Send to Kindle service.
Does ArticleFerry need an account?
No. There is no sign-up, and your settings are stored only in your browser.
